What is dermaplaning and how does it work?

Dermaplaning is a simple, safe method of exfoliation that consists of using a scalpel to gently stroke off the top layers of dulling dead skin cells and vellus hairs ('peach fuzz') revealing a smoother, brighter complexion. Dermaplaning allows for greater penetration of skincare products so is perfect for before a peel or skincare mask, and creates a flawless canvas for makeup.

Who is it suited for?

Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types except those with active acne. If you have deep cystic acne, wait until breakouts are clear before trying this treatment. As always discuss any allergies or skin sensitivities before starting a treatment. Dermaplaning is most often used on patients with rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, or fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment results in a more refined, smooth, “glowing” appearance.

Will my hair grow back thicker?

Many clients are concerned that the vellus hair will grow back thicker and darker after dermaplaning. This is not the case. As the hair is superficial vellus hair, it will grow back at the same rate and texture as before the treatment. This has been scientifically proven as hair cannot change from vellus hair to terminal hair (like eyebrows or scalp hair) due to its DNA make-up.

How often can I have dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning removes 21 days worth of dead skin cells, so it’s best to allow the skin to complete its rejuvenation cycle before your next treatment.
